The Microsoft Surface Book is a 2-in-1 PC designed and produced by Microsoft, part of the company’s Surface line of personal computing devices.

Announced on October 6, 2015, at the Windows 10 Devices Event in New York City, it was released on October 26 in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and China. It was later released in Hong Kong on November 3, in Australia and New Zealand on November 12, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on November 13. The Surface Book is notable for its full-sized, detachable keyboard which uses a dynamic fulcrum hinge that expands when opening the lid to support or retract the display while maintaining a sturdy structure.

The device is 0.51 inches (13 mm) high (when closed) and weighs 3.48 pounds (1.58 kg). The tablet portion alone is 0.3 inches (7.7 mm) high and weighs 1.76 pounds (0.80 kg), making it Microsoft’s thinnest and lightest tablet device to date. The 13.5-inch PixelSense display has a resolution of 3000×2000 (267 PPI) with support for 10-point multi-touch; it also features an aspect ratio of 3:2 to match that of most standard letter size paper documents.”

Prices for the new Surface Book start at $1,499 for the Intel Core i5 model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That’s $200 more than the entry-level MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,299. The Surface Book is available for preorder starting Oct. 7 and will begin shipping Oct. 26 in the United States.


The Surface Book offers an Intel Core i5-6300U CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and integrated Intel HD graphics520. The display is a two-in-one detachable tablet with a resolution of 3000 x 2000. The body is constructed from magnesium and aluminum.

The device has two USB 3.0 ports, full-size SD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, and 3.5mm headphone jack. The power supply is attached to the charging port on the right side of the tablet portion. The device also has an 8MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and digital zoom, as well as a 5MP front-facing camera for Skype calls and Windows Hello authentication.
