  1. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update .
  2. Select Advanced options.
  3. Under Choose how updates are installed, select Pause updates or Hide updates.

How to disable Windows Update in Windows 10

You can disable Windows Update in Windows 10 through the Control Panel, Registry Editor, or Group Policy Editor. Let’s take a look at all three methods so you can choose the one that works best for you.

Stop the Windows Update service

Windows Update is a service that controls how and when new updates for Windows are installed. By default, Windows Update is turned on and set to automatically install new updates as they become available. However, you can disable Windows Update if you don’t want Windows to install new updates automatically.

There are two ways to disable Windows Update: you can disable the service entirely, or you can set it to manual so that you can choose when to install new updates. We’ll show you both methods.

Set Windows Update to disabled in the services app

1) Open the Services app. You can either search for it in the Start menu or you can open it from the Administrative Tools folder in the Control Panel. 2) Scroll down to Windows Update in the list of services and double-click it to open its properties window. 3) Set the Startup type pop-up menu to Disabled, then click the Stop button to immediately stop the Windows Update service. 4) Click OK or Apply to save your changes and close the window.

How to prevent Windows Update from reinstalling itself

We all know that feeling when you’re in the middle of working on something important and suddenly, without any warning, Windows Update starts installing itself. You can try to hide the update and hope that it doesn’t come back, but eventually it will. So, how can you prevent Windows Update from reinstalling itself?

Use the Show or Hide Updates tool

The Show or Hide Updates tool lets you control which updates are installed on your computer. You can use this tool to hide updates so that they don’t install automatically. You can also use it to show updates that you’ve previously hidden.

This tool is only available for certain types of updates, such as drivers and optional updates. It’s not available for important updates, such as security updates.

To find and run the Show or Hide Updates tool:

  1. Open the Control Panel, and then select System and Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
  2. Under “Choose how updates are installed,” select the option that you want:
  • Install important updates automatically (recommended)
  • Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates
  • Check for new updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
  1. If you see a message that says there aren’t any new recommended or important updates available, it means that your computer is up to date. If you still want to check for any other updated, select Check for updates. 4. Select the option that you want under “Important Updates.” You can choose to have them downloaded and installed automatically or just downloaded automatically; if you select just downloaded, you’ll need to install them manually later using the steps under “Install Updates Manually.” If there are any optional driver or softwareupdate available, they’ll be listed here too; you can choose to install them if you want, but it’s not required. 5. Select OK to save your changes and close the Advanced options window
Delete the Windows Update Registry key

If you delete the Windows Update Registry key, it will prevent Windows Update from reinstalling itself. You can use this method to hide a specific update or driver update, or you can use it to prevent Windows Update from installing any updates at all.

To delete the Windows Update Registry key, you will need to open the Registry Editor. To do this, type “regedit” into the Start menu, and then press Enter. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

If this key does not exist, you will need to create it. To do this, right-click on the “Windows” key in the left pane and select “New -> Key.” Name the new key “WindowsUpdate.” Then, right-click on the new “WindowsUpdate” key and select “New -> Key.” Name this key “AU.”

Once you have created the AU key, double-click on it to open it. In the right pane of the AU key, right-click on an empty space and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value.” Name the new value “NoAutoUpdate.” Double-click on NoAutoUpdate and set its value to 1.

Conclusion

Hiding updates doesn’t prevent your computer from downloading or installing them, but it does give you some control over when they happen. Microsoft also gives you the option to defer feature updates, which is a good way to delay major updates until you’re ready for them.
